Speech pathologists diagnose and treat people who have communication and/or swallowing disabilities. The course develops the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills needed to work with people with disorders in speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing. Studies include anatomy/physiology, linguistics/phonetics, and specialised topics in communication impairments and swallowing disorders in adults and children. This course also focuses on rural and remote practice, speech pathology issues relevant to Indigenous people, and on interdisciplinary learning. Clinical placements commence in second year and continue in third and fourth years. Students must travel outside Townsville for at least one of two eight-week block placements in fourth year. Levels 1 and 2 can be completed part-time however levels 3 and 4 must be competed full-time.
Professional honours (full-time); research honours (full-time). Students must achieve a minimum GPA of 5.5 across levels 1 and 2 to be offered a position in the research honours major.
Prior to taking professional placements, students must provide evidence of immunity to hepatitis B, MMR, varicellla, and pertussis, and current Provide First Aid and CPR certificates. Students must complete all professional experience placement requirements by the prescribed deadlines and maintain currency of these requirements in order to stay admitted in the course. A Suitability Card is required and an Australian Federal Police check may be required; refer to institution.
