In the higher education diploma year, students develop fundamental academic skills and cement their knowledge in foundation subjects and core concepts. Students gain skills in providing professional guidance to assist others in resolving personal or professional problems. On successful completion of the diploma, students progress into the Griffith University Bachelor of Counselling with credit. During university studies, students gain the theoretical knowledge and applied skills in preparation for registration and practice as a professional counsellor. Students obtain advanced counselling skills by completing a counselling practicum, counselling theory and practice, methods of coaching and group facilitation, and case management. Griffith College
Progression to the bachelor’s degree is limited to a quota of five places per intake at the Brisbane South (Nathan) campus. Unlimited places are available at the Gold Coast campus.

Completion of this bachelor can lead to career opportunities in general counselling, as well as specialised areas such as alcohol and other drugs counselling, youth and family counselling, relationship counselling, grief support, correctional services and telephone or crisis support. You’ll also have the foundation to pursue further study or professional development toward roles such as career counsellor, rehabilitation counsellor, guidance counsellor or mediator.
